Lunchtime burger

Today we took some colleagues who are visiting Singapore for the first time to Lau Pa Sat, a hawker centre in the middle of the the central business district, so they could eat chicken rice and laksa. Since I can’t eat either of those, I went over the road to the food court at Asia Square, and got a veggie burger from Triple O’s. Because what says Singaporean food more than a Canadian burger? 4 weeks of eating


I remember reading psychological research from a few years ago, that purported to show that people who photographed their meals enjoyed them less than those who did not. I’m not sure if that is entirely true (or if it’s biassed by groups of dieters guiltily photographing their lunches) but there was a great feeling of being unburdened when I sat down to lunch today and realised that I wasn’t going to record it for posterity. Or perhaps I was jubilant because I was having dessert.

Daze without sugar

I cut added sugar out of my diet yesterday, after stopping drinking coffee a week ago. It’s only been by cutting sugary food out completely that I’ve become aware of how much there is to eat at the office. There’s the inexhaustible supply of chocolate in the microkitchen. There’s the gorgeous little doughnuts served up at breakfast. There’s the birthday cakes. There’s the free ice cream (it’s a sign you’re jaded when you are annoyed that there’s only Haagen Daz in the freezer and nothing more exciting).

Pizza the action

After almost a year and a half (since a dreadful bout of food poisoning from badly prepared pasta sauce that she then associated with a pizza), La Serpiente has begun eating pizza again. She asked for it today, and we were too tired to cook tonight, plus I had a migraine and pizza is the traditional pre-run food I rely on, so we got two margarita pizzas from Extra Virgin. The bases were nicely cooked, crunchy scorch marks and all, but the cheese topping was a little overdone. The girls, already full of salmon, didn’t care and carried on eating. As long as I got four slices, I was happy too. 

Afterwards, I entertained Destroyer by having her run between my legs. Unfortunately she’s now slightly too tall, so she sprints at me, forgets to duck her head and headbutts me in the crotch, which for her is a great fun way to spend the evening, but for me is not ideal race prep. I suppose one source of pain is the same as another. 

The kids went to sleep quickly again tonight. Destroyer didn’t nap today (for no good reason we can discern) and both of them had gone swimming today, so putting them down was very easy. That left me to worry about the migraines I’ve been having, and to blame them on my awful diet. Of late I’ve eaten so much sugar: cans of Coke, free ice cream in the office, and other garbage like salt and vinegar crisps. It sounds ridiculous to do things in this order, but from next week, once the marathon is done, I’m really going to have to sort out my diet. 

But not the pizza. I’m keeping that.

Ice Cream Football

The other day at MEC we purchased an ice cream ball. This was sold to us as a fun alternative to an ice cream machine; you fill up a football sized container with ice and ice cream ingredients, and then kick it around for 20 minutes until you have ice cream. I was immediately ready to buy one, but then we had to find a time and opportunity to use it.

Men Love Pies, Girls Like Hummus

Today I baked a cake from Men Love Pies, Girls Like Hummus, a cookery book I borrowed from the library solely on the strength of its title. I borrowed three books: one by Gordon Ramsay that had at least one example of egregious copy-and-paste, a compendium of recipes from Epicurious, and Men Love Pies, Girls Like Hummus.

Of the three, I found MLPGLH the easiest to get on with. The Epicurious book feels quite impersonal as it’s just recipe after recipe from an assortment of random people on the internet. Gordon Ramsey’s book is dense, but MLPGLH is short, has an anecdote to frame each recipe that doesn’t go into too much detail, and has a chatty tone that implies the author is one of your mates who happens to like cooking a lot, rather than some expert stood on a lofty pedestal.

Plus, it includes a recipe for cake made with cola.
