Easy Sunday

Tonight was Peter Jackson night again: this time, I persuaded my wife to watch The Frighteners, his 1996 ghost film, a sort of ramshackle reworking of Ghostbusters with Michael J Fox, an Andie McDowell lookalike and Gary Busey’s son as an unhinged ghostly murderer. I’d forgotten that it starts with quite a scary opening, and is full of death and mutilation, despite the film being categorized as "Comedy" in the iTunes store. I wonder if Meet The Feebles is categorized as "Children’s" or not.

Today was unexpectedly enjoyable, after our daughter kept us up all night with bursts of wailing, interspersed with her prowling silently around her cot, before reaching some impediment to her motion and then screaming the house down again. I had wanted to go running again, but missed my 6:30 start and only got to do 20 minutes late this evening, with a mischievious GPS that told me I was running one-second kilometres.

We did go for a walk with Felicity after brunch, and I carried her for about two kilometers. She’s a wonderful child, but I have to say, after carrying sixteen pounds of baby for a mile and a half, it feels great to put her down. Freed of that weight, you start to stride around like a superhero, suddenly moving effortlessly, light on your feet, body relaxed.

In the afternoon, she contented herself with pulling hairs out of my legs and occasionally clambering over me. None of us napped this afternoon, but I did manage to write another chapter of Gap Year, which I’ve felt bad for neglecting, and with Felicity fairly placid, we got the apartment tidy again. (It was tidy yesterday, and then we went out in the evening, and it magically rearranged itself into an utter tip while we were out.) I even recorded ten minutes of bedtime reading for Felicity, so while I’m out tomorrow she can hear Her Father’s Voice, reading to her about zombies. Postmodern zombies, that is.

So all in all, a very good day. Surprisingly good, in fact.

    • Not quite crawling yet. She’s mastered going up on all fours and then flopping forward, which gets her about an inch of forward movement each time. However, now she can grab and pull leg hairs, she has much more traction.

Oh, and she can now right herself from prone to sitting, which was terrifically exciting to watch today. Although I worry that sounds like “Look at my child! It conforms to standard developmental yardsticks!” 🙂
