Moved

We moved today, the culmination of a stressful week of packing things into boxes and shuttling back and forth between apartments. Today a team of men wearing indoor football shoes and matching tshirts arrived and grappled with all the bulky furniture and other cumbersome objects we were incapable of shifting ourselves. I didn’t have any coffee all day and I didn’t eat anything substantial until 3pm, so I was reduced to lolling on the sofa and watching other people toil. Middle class, much?

As a result, the apartment that was earlier a beautiful white space is now jammed full of boxes, some of which contain junk we couldn’t be bothered to sift through when we left Hong Kong. I remember stuffing a winter weight duvet into a wardrobe today: overkill for Hong Kong, let alone fully tropical Singapore. I worry what all the boxes yet to be unpacked (nine in the spare room alone) will reveal, and how much psychic pain and suffering I’ll experience when we start throwing out their contents.

Also, I put up some shelves today, which made me feel as manly as any rebuild of Ikea furniture can. I was given these shelves in Hong Kong, exact replicas of shelves I gave away when I left Folkestone in 2006, and these have moved with me four times now. The bolts are growing squeakier and squeakier as I undo and redo them, and part of me worries that I should be greasing them, but as a rule one doesn’t lubricate furniture.

Tonight, we went out drinking. Tomorrow at 5:30am I go out running. I worry these may not be entirely compatible pursuits.

  1. Can we mail you some more shelving ? We have some of our own we are trying to let go of. Too much emotional attachment to shelving is in theory a very silly thing !
