Spinning again

Today, having had no exercise this week apart from a run around the track on the 26th floor of my building (a mere 800 metres, rather than the rumoured 2,400) I went to 7cycle, for the first time in three weeks. They’ve changed the schedule around slightly, and instead of thr Thursday lunchtime slot being the usual Road session, it was 7Cycle’s "Signature" class.

This is quite similar to the Road class, except they make you do "choreography with hand weights". I was a bit dubious before we started, but it ended up being another spin class, but with extra upper body exercises, and a few times where you stood up on the pedals and then crouched backwards while still spinning ("tapping it back" in ludicrous indoor cycling parlance).

I was in a rush to get to the class as I’d spent more time than expected explaining to somebody some of the niceties of statistical significance, so I didn’t have a chance to fill my water bottle at the office. Unfortunately, the water cooler at 7Cycle had vanished, and so I had to do all 45 minutes with no more than a sip of water that had been at the bottom of my bottle. I contemplated licking the sweat from my arms for relief, but strangely it never got that far.

I didn’t go quite as hard as I would have done otherwise, because of my fear of dehydration. That seemed to work out for the best as I’m usually never cautious enough at the start and always blow up by midway through the class. I came in as the most energetic rider of the session, which is a nice little ego boost.

Then I went back to work. That is the advantage and disadvantage of a lunchtime workout: you get to escape the stress of the office for an hour, but when you return you’re probably still dripping with sweat from your body deciding you haven’t attained the required homeostasis before putting your shirt back on. Luckily, nobody was sitting next to me.

My scales are in the other apartment so it will be a few days before we verify if this has had any effect on me. In which time I’ll have had ample opportunity to get full of beer again. Although hang on, I’m not drinking. I think…
