  • Natural History and Unnatural Fear

We took the girls to South Kensington today to visit a museum. I’d have liked to have gone to the V&A, but a collection of priceless ceramics is not the best place for two small girls who want to run and jump as much as they can. The Science Museum is the furthest from the […]

  • Horniman and the Walrus again

Another year passes, another visit to the Horniman Museum and Gardens in Forest Hill, and another chance for me to hold my daughters up in front of the Walrus. I’m getting weaker or La Serpiente is getting heavier – I’m not sure if I’ll be able to manage a whole decade of this. I’ve also […]

  • Pacific Science Center

This morning we went to the Pacific Science Center, near the Space Needle in Seattle. It was a typical Seattle Saturday; grey and wet and cold, but the butterfly garden at the Center promised a bit of the warmth Singapore has accustomed me to.

  • Natural History, Singapore

Today we went to the National History Museum, over in the National University. There are some huge dinosaur skeletons and the skeleton of a sperm whale that washed up on a Singapore beach a couple of years ago.

  • At the National Gallery

Last night there was a party in the flat above us. I’m not sure if it was a Chinese New Year party (it would have been a day late) or just a regular make-a-huge-bellowing-noise-every-ten-minutes-for-four-hours party. Either way, the yelling continued until about two a.m. I couldn’t sleep at all, and I was quite surprised that […]

  • How late it was, how late

Yesterday, as well as reading about terrible things in Croydon, we took La Serpiente Aquatica Negra back to Horniman’s Museum to remind her what the walrus looks like: It’s almost two years since she first met the walrus but she seemed to be quite happy to be reacquainted with him. (Her? The gender of the […]

  • Wallace and fish

Today we went to the Wallace Collection on Manchester Square. This is a decent-sized museum, housed in a converted house, just a few minutes’ walk from Selfridges. It’s something of a shame that I never visited while I was living and working in London, but sometimes you only appreciate things when they’re harder to come […]

  • Trying to be cultured

After yesterday’s escapade, I was hoping for something more rewarding than having my daughter defecate on me, so we went up to London to the museums of South Kensington. I still wish that stretch had been renamed Albertopolis, but you can’t have everything.

  • An offering to the great walrus

No visit to South London would be complete without a visit to the Horniman Museum in Forest Hill. When we first arrived in the UK, I was worried by rumours that the walrus would not be in residence (he had gone to the Turner Contemporary museum in Margate, as even stuffed walruses must spend their […]
