  • More flying around

Having not really had time to adjust to Washington state, I got on another plane this morning and flew to New York.

  • A day

I failed to sleep much on thr plane, instead watching a Luc Besson film (Anna, a dog’s breakfast of flashbacks punctuated by a few good fight scenes) then got an Uber home rather than go to the office. After all, I had no meetings, just calls, and I could do those anywhere.

  • Away again and then back again

After our friends’ wedding, I had one more drink and then went to bed, and woke up early on Sunday. I’m not sure if I adjusted completely or never adjusted, running on adrenaline and hope, but I was up by 8am, wandering around Singapore fetching coffees and going to the shops to purchase mince pies […]

  • Lonesome tonight

On the way into town from the airport last night, I was struck by how Singapore isn’t my home any more; this was the city I’ve lived in for the longest time since I left home to go to university. When I got to the office today, I began to feel more keenly the difference […]

  • The Secrets Of Drearcliff Grange School

To confuse myself, I read the sequel (The Haunting Of Drearcliff Grange) first, but then devoured The Secrets on my way to Singapore. It’s amusing that what I took from the sequel to be the big story of the first book, turns out to be something that doesn’t happen in the first book at all; […]

  • Anno Dracula – One Thousand Monsters

A long time ago, Kim Newman wrote Drachenfels, which was a novel with a vampire, Genevieve Dieudonne, who wasn’t a generic villain, and that did so well for him that he couldn’t give her up. She showed up in several more Games Workshop novels before ending up in Anno Dracula, Newman’s alternate history where Queen […]

  • Trying to get out

I’m on the 11:45am Delta flight from Seattle to Narita. To confuse people, there’s a 12:30 JAL flight to Narita that’s from the adjacent gate, so everyone began to mill around, baffled and confused. Then the Delta gate staff began to make announcements, mumbling as quietly as they could. Derisory shouts from the crowd began […]

  • Bad start to a morning

Tomorrow I fly to Singapore, or rather, tomorrow I get on a plane and I disembark in Singapore first thing on Friday morning. I waited until tonight to pack, after the kids had squealed and raged a bit about not having enough extra snacks after dinner. Thus, I feel a bit broken now. I’m sprawled […]

  • Veterans Day

It’s Veterans’ Day today, which is one of those curious American holidays that isn’t a holiday for everyone. No, I’m not complaining because ex soldiers get the day off and I don’t. More like I’m confused that the schools are shut but I still have to go to work. Unlike Labo(u)r Day, which everyone gets […]

  • Some language

We took the girls to Tempest Coffee this morning, where they had incredible doughnuts, and also allowed us to say goodbye to our friends who were just in town for the weekend.
