More track work

This evening, still a bit addled by the day, I went out to the track for another threshold session. Tonight’s brutality was 20 minutes, followed by a 4 minute rest, then 5 more minutes, a 1 minute rest and 5 more minutes.

20 minutes is not quite enough time for me to do 5k, but cruelly almost enough. I kept fairly even pace for the first six laps, then lost a bit of willpower for the second half, before recovering for the last few. I managed a 20:33 5k, which I think is my best this year, but that meant I only had 3 minutes and 27 seconds of recovery time before we started again. Then, a bit knackered, the next three laps took me slightly more than 5 minutes, cutting into my recovery time, making the last 5 minutes even tougher, and by then I was losing a lot of consistency.

Next week we start all over again, with 6 5 minute intervals, and so on. If I can graduate to 1:36 laps and stay consistent, in another 4 weeks I could be banging out a 20 minute 5k. Let’s see how that turns out.
