Cars again

Today I called a few dealerships to enquire about a replacement for our Hyundai. The first one wouldn’t even let us take a test drive of the car, but the second was happy for us to drive one. So we went ten miles to Lynwood and I drove a $60,000 Ford Mustang Mach E, which seems quite ridiculous.
It has all the bells and whistles; it can park itself, it has a display panel bigger than my iPad, heated seats and steering wheel and a million other gadgets. It didn’t feel as nippy as our Kona (maybe because it’s a bigger car) and it doesn’t have the range, but oh, it was a lot of fun. It lacks conventional door handles, which is a strange thing for a car not to have, but that’s design for you. I’m not sure about the wing mirrors on it, but it comes with an enormous sunroof and a space in the front where the engine would go, to put more stuff. Oh, the march of technology…

My wife, I was surprised to discover, thought the colour was nice (a subdued metallic blue) and was astounded by the automatic parking. So if we can get a new one specified, with a bigger battery and cheaper, and if we get the payout for the current car, then this may be workable.

Or we have no car all winter. It’s tricky, isn’t it?
