Economics

La Serpiente has decided that we should double the money she gets for emptying the dishwasher, from 25 cents to 50 cents a time. Her justification for this is because she’d like more money.

I asked the mother of one of her friends how much she gets as an allowance, and she told me "a dime, but she does have to do a lot of chores": so while La Serpiente could in theory be making bank with 10 dishwasher emptyings per week, he friend gets … ten cents.

I’m not sure how much I should give her. I want her to have some sense of fiscal responsibility, and it would also be nice if she could buy things, but I also don’t think it’s good to just acquiesce with the initial demand to double things. And then, given the meltdown when we asked her to bring cutlery to the dinner table tonight, maybe there’s other base levels of behaviour we want to demand before there’s an allowance… Am I just being mean?

  1. You’re never mean. Maybe a choice of tasks to earn pocket money. I.e do two out of three but one HAS to be the dishwasher. Does she put the stuff away as well ? What do you think ?
