This morning I went for a 45 minute run with a colleague from the old days at Expedia, Dave, and did slightly more than I’d expected. I drank too much coffee and not enough water afterwards, and that meant that although I had the chance for a nap this afternoon I couldn’t capitalise on it. Not to worry, I got to make myself useful cutting up strawberries for a dessert instead.
This evening I went over to Seattle Bouldering Project, which occupies an enormous warehouse to the south of Seattle. Unlike Stone Gardens, the staff are friendly and personable, and answered all my questions as if they wanted to help, rather than as if I was some interference in their normal existence.
I thought the woman in the cafe was odd though. I decided to have some pizza before I went climbing, and there were three choices: cheese, special or vegan. I asked what kind of cheese was on the cheese pizza.
"Cheese" she said, as though that was the stupidest question she’d ever heard. Oh well. It was adequate, or possibly misguided if you’re then going to do two hours of strenuous exercise.
I didn’t go to every part of SBP, but I did a fair amount. The climbs are graded by colour, which roughly matches a range: yellow are V0, red are V1-V2, green are V2-V3, and so on, but as with all climbing these ratings are a little arbitrary and overlapping, and there were greens I could do and reds that defeated me. Still, I could do most of the V2 that I attempted, so that was good.
After two hours of hanging from a chin up bar and from various abrasive surfaces, my hands were sore. I asked at the counter and they advised me to use a cannabis-based lotion to sooth my skin. Maybe I’ll take a tube of that to Singapore. Or maybe not, because I’m not keen on ending up in prison.
Anyway, that was a nice few hours. It feels more friendly than Stone Gardens, which is a little bit annoying as it’s further away, but then Uber isn’t that expensive.
