  • Off the plane

After twenty-five hours of airplanes and airports, we finally arrived in Nova Scotia. To finish things off, the pilot landed seemingly as fast as he possibly could, one of those oh-god-are-we-coming-in-sideways landings where you think you’re going to throw up or get thrown out of the plane. But everything was fine.

  • Cheerio, Canada

The flight back to London from Halifax leaves at 23:45, which is a harsh hour. On the positive side, that left me with a whole day to wander around Dartmouth, visit my favourite coffee shop (Two If By Sea), have a relaxing dinner down by the ferry terminal and nap a lot, but it also […]

  • A fall from grace

This morning, after not sleeping much, we had breakfast, then all went back to bed. La Serpiente Aquatica Negra had been squally all night, possibly from overindulging on refried beans at the Mexican restaurant. Whatever the reason, we had another hour and a half of sleep, then tried to start the day again. We hadn’t […]

  • Small children entente

We stayed overnight with friends in Wolfville, who have a child a year older than La Serpiente Aquatica Negra. Since our child is built, comparative to her contemporaries in Singapore, like a dump truck, it was interesting to see her interact with a girl who was much bigger than her. No longer could she barge […]

  • Oaklawn Farm Zoo

This afternoon we drove to the Oaklawn Farm Zoo, a sprawling site in the middle of farmland near Aylesford. When I heard about a farm zoo, I assumed a few cows and a mangy old horse, but as well as the obligatory pigs, rabbits and chickens, there are two tigers, three lions, leopards, jaguars, cougars, […]

  • Nothing but pizza

This morning we went for a walk around Windsor. On Mondays, most shops are shut, apart from the supermarket, a single coffee shop and a health food store that sells fudge. Fudge must be healthy if they serve it in a health food shop. There are also a lot of pizza places in Windsor. There’s […]

  • Catharsis

We got up early this morning and went to breakfast at a local cafe, where I told some people about my business plans: the 100 square feet of drywall and two sledgehammers get rich quick scheme, the giant pair of hands, and the baby weightlifting classes. And then we went home again.

  • The Flying Muffler

As promised to her, we took our daughter to see the Flying Muffler today, after first opening a Canadian bank account for her, eating a chocolate croissant as big as my face, and doing some early Christmas shopping.

  • Thirteen Timbits, please

Yesterday I wasn’t in as good a mood as today. I pit that down to Tim Hortons’ doughnuts, the culinary equivalent of an asymptote; something you should be forever approaching, without ever reaching. If I hadn’t eaten that maple dip doughnut, the promise of it would have remained forever as a platonic ideal, rather than […]

  • The disappointment of doing doughnuts

I lost 42 and a half minutes of my life today, on hold waiting for Air Canada’s reservations department to answer the phone. All I wanted to do was ensure that I got a vegetarian meal on the flight back to London at the weekend, a task that took thirty seconds to achieve when I […]
