Stuck between stations

Two of our best friends in Singapore are moving to Hong Kong, and they have a lot of booze to get rid of, so this evening we went over the road to their flat for dinner.

In some parallel universe where we had a babysitter, that is.

When I got home from work I helped bathe Destroyer and La Serpiente, then my wife took the first shift. I trotted over to our friends, scarfed down a beer and a quesadilla, then rushed back to relieve my wife. La Serpiente had gone down, and Destroyer was shuffling a little.

No sooner had my younger daughter gone to sleep than there was a wail from outside the door, and I exited the bedroom to find a distraught La Serpiente. I took her back to her bed and cuddled her for a while, then left the room and engaged in half an hour of close-quarters combat, the battle of wills where she’d climb out of bed and come open the door, and I’d look at her, and she’d look at me, and then I’d put her back in her bed and the merry dance would begin again.

By the time she was done it was almost ten, so instead of demanding another swap with my wife, I retired to the bedroom to plan my 5k training schedule for the next three months. Truly, I have a thrilling life.

I’m a little bit tetchy today; La Serpiente woke me up at 4:30 this morning and I didn’t get back to sleep until 7am, 15 minutes before the alarm went off, so the whole day has been an uphill climb. I suppose that means I should sleep well tonight though, but everything has been slightly harder than it should have been. I don’t think the second coffee even helped, really…
